 July PD - It Just Gets Better!

On Saturday 25th July, I attended the Professional Development event on ‘Cultural Influences and Alcohol’ presented by Professor Ann Roche from the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) and Sandy Dunn from the Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia (DASSA).

There was a great turn out to the event with over 70 attendees, which was a fitting reflection of the quality of the speakers, and the relevance of this topic in our work as counsellors. Both presenters came armed with a lot of material for registrants, with an intriguing 200 page book full of the latest research and current knowledge relating to alcohol and young people and a brochure explaining the new alcohol guidelines.

Both speakers brought handouts of their presentation and a variety of resources from DASSA and NCETA. This was greatly appreciated as I was able listen to the presentation more fully, rather than scribbling notes and will allow me to reflect upon the material at a later point.

Professor Ann Roche presented first describing various cultural influences on the consumption of alcohol, particularly young people, which was very comprehensive, and displayed an incredible depth of knowledge of the topic. Her presentation discussed changes in society that have supported a strong alcohol culture in our society, which can inform us as counsellors to better understand our clients from the context in which they live. Anne talked about how people are getting married later, getting a mortgage later, and having children later, which is leading to greater disposable incomes for young people.

Ann also talked about the marketing and consumerisation of youth culture, and provided an insight into current cultural drinking norms. Professor Roche expertly weaved both qualitative and quantitative research into a powerful, well rounded picture that was easy to understand and answered a number of questions from the audience before we had a break. I suggested to the people on my table that I didn’t want her to stop talking because I wanted to hear more from her and I felt that we had only just scratched the surface. This was reflected back to me by those that I talked to, having really enjoyed the presentation.

A refreshing experience for attendees at the July PD

The food during our break obviously struck a chord with attendees, with the soup disappearing fast, along with the variety of cakes that accompanied it. The foyer was filled with noise of people talking about the presentation and networking. I always enjoy the opportunity to catch up with my peers that I don’t normally get to see.

Our second speaker Sandy Dunn commenced after the break, and focussed on how we as counsellors should approach the issue of alcohol with our clients. Sandy spoke from 25 years experience at DASSA as a drug and alcohol counsellor, which was evident in her examples taken from personal experience and expert knowledge in this area. Sandy was full of humour and helped to demystify alcohol counselling and increase our confidence in using these strategies in our own practice. It was a shame that Sandy didn’t get through all her notes as she provided for us a wealth of information and resources and many members said that they wanted to hear more.

I left the event enthusiastic to talk to my girlfriend about what I had learnt and to start reading the book that was given to all attendees. I’m also looking forward to our next Professional Development event in November as they seem to get better and better each time!

 Forgotten to Renew Your Membership?

If you haven't renewed your membership yet, it's now overdue. The discount period for prompt payment has ended, so the full fee is now payable.

Please remember the importance of maintaining membership as it is becoming all the more crucial as the government moves toward tighter regulation of the profession and the consequent need to be affiliated with a recognised peak body.

And don't forget the savings extended to members in cost of attendance at PD events and the annual conference.

 Members Vote for Change at the SGM

At the Special General Meeting of the Association held in mid June to review aspects of the Association’s Constitution, ten proposals were considered and voted upon. Of these, nine were adopted and include the renaming of the Registered membership category to Clinical membership, an adjustment of Affiliate membership entitlements and an extension of the role of the Returning Officer. The maximum number of proxy votes that may be held by a voting member present at general meetings remains at two.

These amendments have been lodged with the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs and we thank our Public Officer, Dr Vicky Sanders for undertaking that role on behalf of the Association.

“Car R’ Us"

Be introduced to the the Cars ‘R’ Us kit. It reflects the optimistic, positive psychology of Choice Theory and Reality Therapy and draws on the Total Behaviour Car model that has been used successfully by Reality Therapists for many years. The Cars ‘R’ Us kit is a mechanism that uses clear and simple metaphors to emphasise that we choose our behaviours. Learn how to use it to help individuals move to a more empowering worldview and learn a practical way to understanding themselves and their feelings.

Session 2
: Jenni-Lee (Experienced teacher & counsellor)

"How We Relate.....Affects"

The workshop is designed to create awareness that:
* how we relate can affect those around us
* how we respond can affect us
* how we relate can in return affect those ....and the cycle continues.

This cycle of relating affects the development of:
* Total Behaviour(s)
* Health
* Your life’s story

How can we relate more affectively?
* Total Behaviour
* Relationships

Time for reflection.

“Positive Relationships – a bridge to family wellness”

The workshop addresses the various stages of life span development and the hazards to mental health that each stage faces. Life stressors and physical un-wellness are increasingly more challenging when coupled with conflicting relationships and unhealthy lifestyles.

The workshop involves the participants in the process of becoming conscious of their inner motivation and basic needs at each life-stage, a core concept of Choice Theory. Participants will have a chance to rate their mental well-being through a survey based on Dr Glasser’s booklet on “Mental Health” (2007)

 Clinical Membership - Should I Upgrade?

Q. What if I’m happy to stay just as a Professional member of CASA and not upgrade to Clinical membership?

A. Professional Membership of CASA is an entry point for membership. It acknowledges that the basic training and basic clinical practice have been undertaken. Post training experience is necessary in order to gain the expertise required to work as an independent clinical practitioner, similar to the experience gained in an internship for a doctor. Thus Professional Membership is seen as a stepping stone to independent clinical practice.

From the government’s perspective, Professional Membership of CASA is equivalent to an internship. To be recognised as a fully qualified counsellor or psychotherapist, Clinical Membership of CASA and consequent Clinical Listing on the PACFA National Register must be achieved. As regulation of the profession gathers momentum, gaining Clinical Membership becomes more important.

 PACFA eNews Now on our Web Site

The latest edition of the PACFA eNews is available on our website. You will be interested to read the latest national news especially regarding the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ARCAP). The PACFA CEO writes:

July 1st 2009 represents the starting date for the operation of ARCAP and the implementation of the Private Health Insurance (Accreditation) Rules across Australia. PACFA and the ACA are now working together to approach the private health insurance corporations to draw their attention to the existence of ARCAP and begin to negotiate provisions for inclusion of the services of psychotherapists and counsellors as associated health professions. An interim code of conduct and compliance procedure has been adopted as the basis for further consultation and development of appropriate arrangements for maintenance of professional standards as a step towards seeking professional title protection using the ARCAP trademarks.
