Body Beautiful - What a Great CASA Workshop!

I had the pleasure of attending the Body Beautiful Workshop held by CASA at the Education Development Centre in Hindmarsh. Despite the incredible heat (in the middle of an unprecedented run of 39 degree days) there was a large audience attendance.

We were treated to two wonderful, engaging speakers, experts in their fields who shared their vast knowledge and captivated us for four hours (it felt like two).

Firstly Dr Jenny O’Dea who travelled from Sydney and presented her research into ‘Trends In Body Image And Distorted Eating In Male And Female Australian Adolescents’. While the title sounds cumbersome Jenny shared her findings in a fun, interactive way that made sense and opened up our eyes to the continual pressure and attitudes our young people face as they grow through puberty and enter adulthood. Jenny also linked the ‘Sex Sells’ advertisement to teenage boys and men through Men’s magazines. I admit I was shocked (the front cover slogans were promoting a certain look for young men to aspire to but which are also unobtainable) as working in a girls' high school I don’t focus on boys' body image as much but as the mother of a teenage son I was horrified by the same messages girls receive being sent to our boys.

Maria Scicchitano was our second speaker. Maria is a Consultant Family Therapist from the Department Of Psychological Heath at the Women’s And Children’s Hospital in Adelaide specializing in Eating Disorders. I have had the pleasure of hearing Maria speak on another occasion and enjoy the way she shares her stories, her experiences and information about what helps and what doesn’t. Maria is open and honest about the devastation an Eating Disorder has on everyone connected to the young person suffering yet she is still able to inspire hope and a way through this most insidious illness.

To wrap up I feel that I need to make mention of firstly Diana Capaldo who, as always, organizes the most delicious food to nourish us. Robert Bullock who had the unenviable task of keeping the day on time and running smoothly. Thank you also to everyone on the Executive Committee for your time and commitment to the members by organizing such an enjoyable day despite the heat and the serious subject matter.

And some Feedback from Others Who Attended the Workshop:

"Congratulations to CASA team for always providing an over-indulgent afternoon."

"Wonderfully warm and expressive speakers. Just right for counsellors!"

"Informative, backed by solid research and really useful to incorporate themes into my counselling."

"Funny and engaging. Both speakers were spectacular."

"Sense of being with like minded people. Really felt like the collective thoughts and emotions in the room were around compassion. It's like this is where the damage starts, back in our early years and our perceptions of ourselves. If as counsellors we can help to prevent the trauma around body image in the young ones, we are doing a good job."

"You have done the most wonderful job. I have such a great time at PD days. They always hit the spot."

"Congratulations on a great afternoon. The timing of breaks was excellent in keeping energy levels up - I was anticipating the length of the day a bit long but the two breaks especially with the first after an hour was very wise and beneficial. The wonderful hospitality does renew the energy and encourage people to talk. Thank you."

"Thank you CASA for all of your efforts, always much appreciated, an honour to be part of such a professional body."

End of Year Drinks - a Good Time Had by All

A group of CASA members got together and enjoyed each other’s company at the Arkaba Hotel on Friday 4th Dec. As the photos indicate, a good time was had by all. Not only did everyone enjoy the informal atmosphere, but they made new acquaintances and exchanged views and ideas about the counselling profession. We plan on having another drinks evening in mid-2010, so come along, have some fun and take advantage of the networking opportunity.

Our Next PD Event - February 6th 2010

Power and Status
Rank and the part it plays in our communication.
A workshop presented by Diana Collett

The workshop is based on the principles developed by Dr. Arnold Mindell and his associates in Process Oriented Psychology, an interdisciplinary approach to counselling and psychotherapy that promotes social change through inclusion and respect. It is appropriate for anyone interested in developing skills for inclusive communication whether that is in a therapeutic setting, between therapist and client, a workplace relationship between bosses and employees or with parents and their children.
