 Meet this year's CASA Committee

The new Executive of CASA is now in session. Our first two meetings have occurred in September and October. The previous Executive Committee was appreciated for its commitment and hard work and we anticipate another successful year ahead. Nearly all of the previous Executive agreed to continue into this year and were voted in, along with two new members, at the recent AGM.   The new team wants to continue to run the affairs of CASA in an accountable, efficient and effective manner.  Meeting the needs of CASA members is still the Executive Committee’s primary focus, and the generous spirit in which CASA has been run will continue.

Let’s meet the team for this year!

President: Pamela Brear
I am very pleased, in this my tenth year as an Executive Committee Member, to be again serving as President and value the privilege of overseeing the management of the Association.  I continue to be passionate about the professionalisation of counselling and delight as regulation inches closer.  I look forward to the opportunity to once more promote excellence in counselling standards, practice and service particularly here in South Australia.

Secretary: Robert Bullock
Over the last twelve months I have been serving on the Executive Committee in the positions of Secretary, Professional Development Convener and CASA Delegate for the PACFA Council, and have been accepted into Clinical Membership for CASA. Working in these roles has been most rewarding and I am looking forward to continuing as Secretary while taking up a new challenge as Membership Convener.
Treasurer: Diana Capaldo
As Treasurer I believe I will be able to contribute to CASA’s evolving ethos and assist in the plans for enhancing and enriching what is already a professional and cohesive organisation. Having held this particular position on the Executive Committee over several years I am both familiar with and experienced in the duties involved. My long term experience as a Committee Member has given me insight into future goals and plans for CASA.
Committee Member: David Hawke
I am committed to furthering the cause of counselling and psychotherapy in South Australia in whatever way I can. In 2008/9 I took the opportunity to serve you by convening our very successful CASA Conference entitled: The Counsellors Toolbox: Equipping Professionals for Best Practice. I am looking forward to convening an exciting conference for next year. I enjoy my work as a professional counsellor and therapeutic group facilitator.
Committee Member: Judy Headley
I have been a member of CASA for the last nine years. I have been a counsellor for over twenty years and for the last nine years I have had my own private practice at a Medical Clinic. I also currently lecture and tutor in Counselling courses in the undergraduate Psychology program at UniSA. I recently graduated with my Doctor of Counselling Degree. I am looking forward to taking up my role as Professional Development Convener and have also recently started assisting on the CASA Editorial Committee.
Committee Member: Sheryle Brenton
I have been a member of CASA for the past three years. Being recently elected on the Executive Committee is a challenge I look forward to. My past experience as a funeral consultant set the pace for my qualification in a Graduate Diploma in Grief and Palliative Care Counselling which has led to my on-going work in this field. I embrace
my role as Ethics Convener and Membership Subcommittee Member with anticipation for a fulfilling and productive time ahead.
Committee Member: Peter Zanol
I have been a member of the CASA Executive for the past year performing various duties during this time. My role as Editor has been a most pleasing one for me since I have been able to introduce some positive changes in the editorial field, in collaboration with various other changes made by the Executive. I look forward to continuing this role for the coming year. I have an administrative background and enjoy working with people utilising an organisational focus. I enjoy counselling students within a school setting.

Members of the Executive hope that we will be able to meet you at the upcoming PD event - "Body Beautiful", Saturday 14th November, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Education Development Centre.  Join us there.

Our Internet Group Advertising Program is up and running, and we have already received positive feedback from members who are getting new enquiries since signing up for the service. Your listing can have up to 50 words of descriptive information about your practice, 2 contact numbers and an email address.

Optionally, you can insert a photograph, web site address, and list for multiple suburbs. Unlike Yellow Pages, you can update your details or subscribe at any time throughout the year. You can subscribe for as little as $100.00 per year.

If you are eligible* and wish to participate, act now by logging into the Members Area of our web site and completing the simple online application form.

* Subscribers must be Professional or Clinical CASA members and have current indemnity insurance.

Feedback from a member - Response to PD Event

I just wanted to feed back to CASA how much I enjoyed the July PD Day I attended about Alcohol and Other Drugs.  The quality of the presenters and the wealth of knowledge and information they provided made the afternoon extremely worthwhile.   Both presenters complemented each other, and it was not only interesting to hear from Prof Ann Roche about the social and cultural changes that have taken place regarding alcohol and drugs, but also helpful to then be given some practical information by Sandy Dunn from the Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia (DASSA) on how to help people who present with substance abuse problems.

These clients are often extremely sensitive regarding their issues and may feel stigmatised and judged by others already, while some are not ready or willing to change at all. It is easy for them to walk out of a session and never return. Consequently, to have useful advice on how to sensitively talk about these problems and first ascertain a client's readiness to change, is something that I can take and use straight away.

This has already proved to be of enormous benefit to me in my counselling. I was also made aware that DASSA provide a service for professionals who can call them at any time for advice on how to deal with particular concerns in this regard.

The abuse of alcohol and other drugs is a growing concern and something we will continue to see present itself in our profession, so I'd like to congratulate the CASA committee for organising such a relevant topic for the PD day.  Keep up the good work!

 November PD Event

BODY BEAUTIFUL!

A Special Professional Development Event

We are very excited about our final Professional Development Event for the year in November called Body Beautiful, with special guests Prof Jenny O’Dea (Research) and Maria Scicchitano (Family Therapy).

Every day now we are exposed to value laden messages about our bodies; images of healthy eating, fitness, youth and beauty. What are some of the political, social and media forces which many believe are contributing to self doubt and dissatisfaction about our physical bodies? How can we better support clients struggling with self esteem issues, body dysmorphia and body dissatisfaction?

We would like to look at positive ways of acknowledging diversity, differences in the human form, balanced attitudes toward nutrition and more rational discussions about the risks of obesity, diabetes and the emergence of disordered eating patterns.

This special event is a celebration of our 'Body Beautiful' (no matter what shape!) and a terrific opportunity for sensible, balanced discussion and networking within your association.

Please mark this event in your diary -

 What Constitutes Professional Development?
Whilst the Association supports our members in furthering their professional skills in a manner appropriate for each individual, for CASA purposes, some specific criteria need to be met.  Please therefore note the following:

Professional Development activities are to be relevant to clinical practice and to core competencies of counselling and psychotherapy. Such activities are thus to be presented by appropriately qualified practitioners who are recognised by our profession as having advanced expertise in the topic being addressed.  As a consequence, up-skilling in areas such as bookkeeping, first aid and massage do not meet the Association’s criteria.

We do invite all our members to participate fully in the Professional Development and Conference programs arranged by CASA and to source other suitable events many of which are listed from time to time on our website.

It is Professional Indemnity Insurance renewal time for many of us.  A reminder that PACFA has negotiated a special insurance package for the members of all its associations through Rowland House Insurance Brokers.

Christian Counsellors Association (SA)
In association with Tabor Adelaide presents:

Family Problems: Understanding Children in ‘Damage Control’.

Helping Children Heal.

Dr Ivan Atkinson, Principle Psychologist of Envision Lifecare Centre, is highly experienced in assisting children and parents who have experienced damaging home environments. Dr Atkinson’s interest in assisting children arose from involvement as Director of a camping program for children, some of whom came from difficult environments. A strong desire to make a difference to these children led him to work in a Parenting Centre, with a focus on counselling families, parents and children, including teaching parenting skills. Currently, Dr Atkinson works with children under the Guardianship of the Minister, through programs established by BCSA and Anglicare, providing consultancy, supervision and individual treatment. Working within these contexts enables a broad understanding of the difficulties faced by parents, families and children. This professional development opportunity will offer insights into the needs of children who have experienced traumatic impact via the family system, including treatment options and best practice interventions. We look forward to greeting you.
