This philosophy is a foundation for the Association and as such informs all aspects of activity including the constitution, the code of ethics and standards of practice.
It is a statement of principles, beliefs and values about our world view of ourselves as counsellors, the service we provide and the individuals and community we serve. At the practitioner level it serves to guide the thoughts and actions of the members. It is also an accessible list of principles for the public.
The Counselling Association:
- is an evolving association and as such its philosophy, policies and procedures will develop through regular reviews.
- recognises and is inclusive of a wide range of counselling and therapeutic approaches.
- applies and models integrity of practice in all its activities including relationships within the association.
- takes an active part in promoting the optimum well-being of individuals, and groups and the community. It will participate in identifying and exploring needs, and informing and developing services and policies to meet these needs.
- takes a pro-active role in the development of the counselling profession through supporting research and education and encouraging the application of these developments in practice.
- advocates for clients’ access to resources which will support them in taking effective action in their lives.
The Practitioner:
- aspires to qualities that are enhancing of spiritual, political, social and ethical development.
- is responsible and accountable for their own practice and delivery of service.
- continues to demonstrate commitment to their ongoing professional development.
- develops the self and uses their self in the therapeutic process and therefore engages in their own personal and professional development.
- acknowledges that in the practitioner/client relationship the practitioner has considerable power and influence. We endeavour to use this power and influence to affirm and further the development of the client and their efficacy in the world.
- seeks to inform the client of any information which enables them to make decisions in the wider community which will assist them in taking effective action in their lives.
The Association and practitioners see the Client as one who:
- continues to evolve as a unique physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual individual.
- has the potential and unique inner resources to take charge of their lives.
- is part of, and interacting with families, groups and society, influencing and being influenced.
